President Akufo-Addo has said his government is considering a blanket implementation of free tertiary education, first of its kind in the world.
According to the president, he is committed to making the biggest investment in education and in the human resources of the country with the belief that these investments will pay off in the future.
Speaking on Wontumi FM as part of his tour of the Ashanti Region, Akufo-Addo said: “What I’ve realised is that countries that are leading in development began by investing in the education of their people and that helped a lot.”
Throwing more light on this idea, the NPP flagbearer said he decided to implement the Free Senior High School as a foundation for him to implement the same policy across all tertiary institutions.
“I don’t want to give a timeline but I’m sure it’s possible.
“For now what has been put in place is a system where students at the tertiary level are provided loans while in school to help them cater for their needs but we’re considering free Tertiary education too,” he said.
President Akufo-Addo upon his assumption to office in 2017 has successfully implemented the Free SHS which has allowed hundreds of thousands of Ghanaian students to get access to secondary education free of charge.
Another question that has lingered is whether the way the policy has been implemented is the best or not especially when there is a supposed disparity in access and quality.
But as we have it now, the president is poised at seeing all Ghanaian students attend tertiary institutions for free, perhaps in his second term if he wins in the December polls.
