COVID-19: Ghana coach Akonnor accepts salary pay cut- Reports
Ghana coach Charles Kwabla Akonnor has agreed to accept a 40 per cent pay cut on his monthly salary according to a report by Kumasi-based radio station Oyerepa FM.
The Black Stars coach has not been paid since his appointment nine months ago.
Ghana’s Minister for Youth and Sports Isaac Asiamah in an interview stated that the Sports Ministry is unable to pay the coach his wages due to financial difficulties as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
He also explained that Akonnor is yet to begin his official duties since his appointment which also justifies why he must accept the pay cut.
“The Sports Ministry and the Ghana Football Association are negotiating that we reduce his salary during these difficult times”, Isaac Asiamah said on Adom TV.
“I know he [CK Akonnor] will agree because we are not in normal times, I will not lie. The truth is that we cannot pay CK Akonnor’s full salary in these difficult times,”
Sources indicate that Akonnor has accepted to take the pay cut ahead of his first official game against Mali next month.
The former Asante Kotoko coach who was appointed earlier this year is on a $25,000 monthly salary.
